CAF Bans Senegal Coach, Players After AFCON Chaos

Confederation of African Football (CAF) has banned Senegal coach Pape Thiaw for five matches following disorder during the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco in Rabat. Senegal won the January 18 match 1–0 after extra time.

CAF said Thiaw was guilty of unsporting conduct and bringing the game into disrepute. Senegalese players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr received two-match bans for behaviour towards the referee.

The Senegal Football Federation was fined $615,000 for multiple violations, including misconduct by players and officials. Morocco also faced sanctions, with Achraf Hakimi banned for two matches and Ismael Saibari for three. Morocco’s FA was fined $315,000 for ball boy misconduct, pitch invasion around the VAR area, and laser use by fans.

The bans apply only to CAF competitions and will not affect preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
